Local organizations celebrate veterans’ service
As the country joins together to honor the nation’s military veterans on Friday, here’s what local groups are doing this week.

Pendleton Marines visit Balboa
The Balboa Bay Republican Women Federated are observing Veterans Day on Wednesday by recognizing Marines from Camp Pendleton. The group’s guests will talk about patriotism. The meeting and lunch is $30, and parking costs $7. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort, 1221 W. Coast Hwy. in Newport Beach. For reservations, call (949) 759-8514.
Veterans visit Mariners Elementary
Mariners Elementary School, 2100 Mariners Drive in Newport Beach, will welcome former military service members to the campus Thursday. After a brief welcoming ceremony at 8:30 a.m., veterans will be welcomed as special guests in students’ classrooms and share photos, stories and letters from their service days. Veterans who would like to participate should call Cheryle Robinson at (949) 645-4668.
Break bread with veterans
From 6 to 10 a.m. Friday, Costa Mesa police will honor local veterans with a breakfast at department headquarters, 99 Fair Drive. Veterans eat free. Breakfast is $5 for everyone else. The event is in its third year, is funded by donations and run by volunteers. For more information, call (714) 754-4895.
Mariners Christian hosts veterans for breakfast
On the Eastside, Mariners Christian School will host its annual breakfast to honor those who served in the military. Starting at 9 a.m. Friday, more than 200 veteran parents and grandparents will have breakfast with kids at the school and share their experiences in war. At 10 a.m., guest speakers will recap their memories and students will perform a tribute. The school can be reached at (714) 437-1700.
Café offers free lunch
Veterans can eat for free Friday at Lucca Café, 6507 Quail Hill Parkway, in Irvine. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., active and former military members can order any lunch plate and drink as a guest of the chefs. Veterans who leave their name, rank, company and dates of service will be mentioned in the restaurant’s weekly online newsletter. Reservations are recommended. Rock out to raise money for Long Beach VA
On Friday evening, a Costa Mesa church is hosting a concert to raise money for the music rehab program at the Long Beach VA. From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., the Rock for Vets band, made up of veterans of all ages and abilities, will rock out at the Crossing Church, 2115 Newport Blvd. Donations are accepted.
