Golfers should get out their nine irons and wash their polo shirts in preparation for a golf tournament where the game is the least of the attractions.

Costa Mesa United is hosting the seventh annual Mesa Verde Charity Golf Classic & Awards Banquet on Monday at the Mesa Verde Country Club, 3000 Country Club Road.

The tournament, known as “an event where every hole is an event,” featured a belly dancer, camel and skateboarders last year.

This year’s theme, “Golf Through the Ages,” will take golfers through time while showcasing the top 20 courses around the world at each hole.

More than 130 players will take to the green in the hopes of raising $100,000 for the community.

The tournament starts at 10:30 a.m.

Although the tournament is full, the public is invited to a gourmet dinner at 5 p.m. The day’s festivities also include a putting contest, silent and live auctions, and an awards ceremony.

Costa Mesa United has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to youth organizations around the city since its inception in 1991. The organization is also credited with garnering support for bond Measure F that funded the Jim Scott Stadium at Estancia High School and an Olympic-size pool at Costa Mesa High School.
