Man stabbed trying to intervene in fight

A man who tried to intervene in a fight between a man and woman outside Costa Mesa's Tiki Bar was stabbed multiple times, police said.

Ismael Sandoval, 26 of Costa Mesa, went outside the bar at 1700 Placentia Ave. to smoke a cigarette about 2:37 a.m. when he saw the disturbance and tried to intervene, but was stabbed multiple times, Costa Mesa police said.

Sandoval then called a friend who dropped him off at Hoag Hospital, where he was treated and released for wounds to his arm and chest, police said.

Police responded to a call of a stabbed victim at Hoag Hospital, and later found evidence of a stabbing near the bar.

Sandoval is an alleged gang member, and it was unclear whether the stabbing was gang related, police said.

Anyone with more information about the incident is asked to call Det. Rob Hanson at (714) 754-5162 or Sgt. Ed Everett at (714) 754-5395.
