Kids get hands on during Ocean Institute programs

The Ocean Institute has made several stops to the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach in the past few weeks.

The institute’s “Visiting Classroom-Safari into the Intertidal Zone” made an appearance at the TLC Branch on April 25, the Main Branch on May 9 and at the Even Start Preschool on May 21, according to a news release.

The program covered topics like what kinds of animals live in tidepools and how important it is to not disturb these animals in their habitats.

Children were able to touch some of the animals found in tidepools and ask questions of the Ocean Institute’s staff.

Even Start kids were also treated to a field trip to the Ocean Institute, which is in Dana Point.

“It is so important for children to have hands-on experiences like this,” Preschool Director, Terry Anne Barman, said in a statement. “When studying biology and science later in their education, they will remember this exciting adventure and learn faster.”

The programs and field trip were made possible through the help of Hearts of Montage.

Cub Scouts honor veterans for Memorial Day

Pack 35 Cub Scouts from Laguna Beach participated in the tradition of planting flags for veterans on May 24 and 25.

Cub Scouts Jeremy Leeds, Cade St. Clair, Sam Richey, Lucas Kravitz, Andrew Domaskis, Jared Moy, Duke Wollam, and Noah Lessard, along with Tom Fay and Committee Chairman Roman Richey, visited Pacific View Cemetery in Corona Del Mar and placed an American flag on the veterans’ gravesites, according to a news release.

The Scouts also planted a flag at the grave site of “Mr. Laguna” Harry Lawrence in the Garden of Valor.

Foundation awards Boys & Girls Club $10,000

The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach has received a $10,000 grant from the Laguna Beach Community Foundation Grant Awards Program.

The money is slated to support the club’s educational youth development programs that are related to the environment, according to a news release.

The Boys & Girls Club focuses on four main initiatives: academic success, character and leadership, healthy choices and creativity.

Exchange Club visits TLC Branch

The TLC Branch of the Boys & Girls Club received a visit from the Laguna Beach Exchange Club on May 24.

Exchange Club members prepared and served lunch and spent some time getting to know the youngsters.

The visit was led by Sande St. John, who hopes there will be future collaboration and service projects with the Boys & Girls Club.

The Exchange Club has worked with local youth for more than 100 years and looks forward to working more with the Boys & Girls Club, according to a news release.
