Police: Newport man struck, killed woman near Palm Springs

A Newport Beach man was arrested near Palm Springs over the weekend after allegedly striking and killing a woman with his sedan while under the influence, according to officials.

Cathedral City police say James Coley, 49, admitted to drinking at a Palm Springs bar Saturday before he struck pedestrian Lourdes Jauregui. Coley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Jauregui, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was crossing the street near Date Palm and Gerald Ford drives about 1:45 a.m.
