Corona del Mar High School graduate Julia Kerr and Newport Harbor High School graduate Paisley Muller also won the 2012 Dorothy Hardcastle Scholarship from the Speak Up Newport board of directors.

They were awarded $1,500 each in recognition for their contributions to the community.

Kerr earned the Girl Scouts’ highest recognition, the Gold Award; volunteered at the Environmental Nature Center for several years; and did both track and field and cross-country for four years. She expects to attend Miami University in Ohio as a engineering management major.

Muller logged more than 500 hours of community service volunteering at Share Our Selves, Second Step and Girls Inc. She played water polo at Harbor for four years and worked as a lifeguard and swim teacher in the community. She is expected to attend Penn State University, majoring in human development and family planning.
