District hires facilities director

Ted Doughty Jr. was named director of facilities, grounds and construction at Laguna Beach Unified School District.

His background is in general construction, school maintenance, operations and facilities, according to news release.

"Ted brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Laguna Beach Unified School District and will support our schools in outstanding fashion," Supt. Sherine Smith said in a statement. "We are truly fortunate to have recruited him away from San Diego Unified School District."

Doughty Jr. has a bachelor's of science in operations management and a master's in public administration, with an emphasis in organizational leadership.


Girls Night Out being held Sept. 27

The Boys & Girls is hosting its fourth annual Girls Night Out from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Wilson Family Estate on Rockledge.

Proceeds from the event, which will offer designer fashions, a live and silent auction, will benefit the club's after-school programs. Tickets can be bought at or by calling Michelle Ray at (949) 494-2535 ext. 103.


Cub Scouts hosting Hot Wheels Grand Prix

Cub Scout Pack 35 will host a Hot Wheels Grand Prix for families interested in learning about Cub Scouts at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Laguna Presbyterian Church's Tankersley Hall, 415 Forest Ave.

Boys in the first through fifth grades can join Cub Scouts. The pack will provide a Hot Wheels car collection for kids to race down a series of professionally-built tracks.

Registration open for basketball league

Registration is on for the Boys & Girls Club's basketball league.

Player evaluations will be held Oct. 1 to Oct. 12 and practices will start Oct. 29, with the season starting Dec. 3, according to a press release.

Participants must be club members which costs $150 per year. Basketball league costs are $100 per player by Sept. 30. A $25 late fee will be charged for applications received after Sept. 30. The league is also seeking coaches.

SchoolPower bringing back dodgeball tourney

Registration is open for SchoolPower's popular dodgeball tournament, Dodgeball III, which will take place Oct. 17.

The event will have three divisions: one for fourth and fifth grades, another for sixth to eighth grades, and a third for high school/adults.

A prize will be awarded to the most creatively costumed team. In order to compete, teams must have six to eight members with at least two players of the opposite gender, according to a news release.

Team slots are limited. Registration fees are $15 per student and $40 per adult.

Spirit Award given to TOW staffer

The school district gave its fifth annual Spirit Award to Margaret Warder, a Top of the World staff member, according to a press release.

The award recognizes a district staff person who displays extraordinary service to others.

"I have known Margaret Warder for many years and find her to be incredibly hardworking and involved as a parent, a community volunteer, and of course, as an LBUSD employee," said Board of Education President Betsy Jenkins in a statement. "I always look forward to seeing her at our school board meetings, and getting her update to us from CSEA. She is a most deserving recipient of the Spirit of LBUSD Award."


Film screening of teen prescription drug abuse

The South Orange County Coalition — made up of representatives from the Dana Point and Laguna Beach, and community organizations and others — is hosting a screening of the documentary, "Behind The Orange Curtain," at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Laguna Regency South Coast Theatre, 162 S. Coast Hwy.

The film is "a documentary that delves into the staggering problem of teenage prescription drug abuse in one of the most affluent counties in the country," the press release said. The showing is free and an expert panel will be available afterward for questions. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
