Police: Man shot himself in Arroyo Park parking lot

A man apparently shot himself while sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot at Arroyo Park, Newport Beach police said Thursday.

Police responded to a call from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department that a despondent man went missing about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

They located the man in a vehicle in the parking lot, and when they attempted to contact him he displayed a gun and shot himself, police said.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries, police said.

Police withheld the man’s identity pending notification of his family.
