Planners to address parking at the Camp

The Costa Mesa Planning Commission is scheduled to hear during its Monday night meeting about the parking situation at the Camp.

The Bristol Street shopping center has several popular restaurants and other specialty food establishments, but its 172 on-site spaces don’t meet the demand during the peak lunchtime and dinnertime hours, according to a city staff report.

The Camp’s management has instituted some valet and off-site parking measures, which the five commissioners will hear about during their 6 p.m. meeting in the City Council Chambers, 77 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa.

The measures include free valet parking during the lunch rush, defined as 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

During the evening hours, the Camp charges $3 for valet. The drivers take cars to one of nine off-site locations, including various lots along Bristol and Baker Street and at 709 Randolph Ave. The sites accommodate as many as 40 cars.

Employees who work at the Camp, however, are using as many as 20 parking spaces at the Shark Club, 841 Baker St., about a third of a mile away.

The commission is also scheduled to hear a request from Pitfire Artisan Pizza, 353 E. 17th St. The restaurant wants to stay open until 2 a.m. instead of 11 p.m.

It also wants to offer valet parking during peak hours, defined as 5 to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

If approved, Pitfire’s rear lounge area, with a smaller menu, would be open until 2 a.m., whereas the full-menu, main dining area would close at 11 p.m. No live entertainment is being proposed.

The Police Department has not expressed concerns about the proposed late hours, the report noted.

The restaurant recently hosted Mayor Jim Righeimer’s first “Meet the Mayor” session, and donated space and pizza for attendees.

The newly opened Beach Hut Deli, 488 E. 17th St., Suite A100, is also applying to sell beer and wine using a state license.
