Man arrested after car chase ends in crash

Newport Beach police arrested a man early Monday after he led them on a chase.

Police took Joshua Patrick Astemborski into custody at 1:30 a.m. after he crashed his vehicle at Jamboree Road, but went over the off-ramp and onto the 73 Freeway, Sgt. Mario Montero said.

Police had called off the pursuit after three minutes, just before the crash, he said. Montero could not confirm why the 26-year-old Irvine resident fled.

Astemborski was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and later released.

Officers arrested him on suspicion of felony evading police officer, Montero said.

The Highway Patrol is handling the traffic collision report, while the Police Department handles the arrest report.
