Charm House Tour returns

It’s time to make reservations for Mother’s Day brunches — and that means it’s time to order tickets for the Charm House Tour.

The tour, which is presented annually by Village Laguna the Sunday after Mother’s Day, will be held on May 19. Five South Laguna homes will be featured.

“South Laguna developed separately from Laguna Beach before the two were connected by South Coast Highway — it is a special place,” said Charlotte Masarik, who helped select the homes on the tour.

Unlike previous tours that began at the Festival of Arts Grounds, participants will board the 2013 tour buses from noon to 5 p.m. at the front parking lot of Mission Hospital Laguna Beach, 31872 S. Coast Hwy. Parking is free on the roof of the hospital garage.

“Mosaic Garden” is the first stop on the tour. Designer Ben Simon and architect Linda Morgenlander moved walls and incorporated patios to add 1,600 square feet to the 600-square-foot cottage buillt in 1943. Banks of windows flood the home and provide ocean vistas.

Romantic Homes magazine recently showcased “Indigo Seas,” the second home on the tour. The 1937 house is located in Coast Royal, one of the early developments in South Laguna. The owner decorated the home with vintage bamboo furniture to create a breezy island interior.

“Casa Katlina’s” Spanish Colonial Revival style is complemented by white-washed walls, dark furniture and colorful fabrics from Central and South America on the interior.

“Benzie’s Bungalow,” a Craftsman-style home, was built in 1931 in an old avocado orchard and underwent a five-year renovation that allowed the kitchen and eating nook to fill with light.

The last stop on the tour is the “Floating Glass House,” perched on a cliff. It hangs over waves crashing on the rocks below.

“The rooms seem to float above the ocean,” Masarik said.

Plaques are presented to the homeowners at an after-tour party.

Kate Clark is tour chairwoman. Masarik and Johanna Felder co-chaired the house selection committee.

“About 85 volunteers will participate in the tour as hosts — we call them crews — at the homes and guides on the tour buses,” Masarik said.

Refreshments will be served at the South Laguna Garden. “We all bake cookies,” she said.

As a special treat, Village Laguna founder Arnold Hano will be signing copies of his recently published book, “It Takes a Villager.”
