Man allegedly assaults restaurant owner

A 34-year-old Laguna Beach man was arrested on suspicion of battery after allegedly assaulting a restaurant owner, police said.

A citizen’s arrest was made for John Carter O’Neal before police arrived to Alessa restaurant at 234 Forest Ave. at 11:12 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. Louise Callus wrote in an email. Laguna Beach police then arrested O’Neal, who they also allege was drunk in public.

Authorities interviewed several people and suspect O’Neal assaulted the restaurant owner, Callus said.

The owner was escorting another man from the restaurant when someone grabbed him from behind and punched him, according to police.

The owner released his grip on the first man and reportedly began to fight with O’Neal, police said.
