Young boy burned in fire-ring fall
A 5-year-old boy was treated for second- and third-degree burns after he fell into a fire ring near the Balboa Pier on Sunday afternoon, authorities said Monday.
The boy was taken by ambulance to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana at about 4 p.m. for treatment of burns on both feet and one arm, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.
Police said his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
Newport Beach police are investigating how the boy fell into the fire ring, Manzella said.
Because of a language barrier between the boy’s parents and first responders, officials had a hard time determining what happened, but it appears to have been an accident, Manzella said.
“There didn’t seem to be any sign of foul play,” she said.
