Dirty-water diversion resumes
Laguna Beach’s water quality department has placed its urban runoff units back online for the summer season.
The city maintains 22 of the diversion units, primarily along the coastline. The units redirect to the sewer system irrigation overrun, pollutants such as brake dust, oil, fertilizers and pesticides, and other debris that collects in storm drains.
About 8 tons of debris and pollutants are pulled out of the diversion structures and hauled away for disposal each year, according to a city news release.
