A 3-year-old passenger was hurt when the driver of an SUV crashed into a closed Starbucks in Newport Beach, authorities said Friday.

Police said Johnny Martinez, 33, of Tustin rammed his vehicle into the coffee shop at Campus Drive and MacArthur Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, grabbed the child out of the car and ran.

He made it about a mile before officers caught him, according to KTLA-TV Channel 5.

Martinez was unhurt, but the child suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hoag Hospital for evaluation, Newport Beach police Lt. Evan Sailor said.

Police arrested Martinez on suspicion of felony child endangerment and felony hit-and-run. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The investigation into the crash is continuing, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Sailor said.

Sailor did not know the relationship between Martinez and the child.

Martinez’s birthday was Thursday, according to jail records.
