Residents rode the rails to ring in the holidays in Costa Mesa on Saturday during an annual event sponsored by L3/Weichman Realtors.

“The Polar Express” — patterned on the popular book and movie of the same name — offered visitors the chance to ride the train at Goat Hill Junction in Fairview Park, take pictures with Santa Claus and participate in an array of activities such as face painting.

Officials also collected gifts and gift cards as part of a toy drive by the Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Department.
