Tall ships pay a visit to Newport Beach

Share

The towering Lady Washington reached up into the sky and back into the 18th century as she made her entrance into Newport Harbor on Wednesday.

The full-scale replica of a Revolutionary War-era tall ship — so called because of her 89-foot mast height — will be in Newport Beach with companion vessel the Hawaiian Chieftain through Monday.

Tours will be provided through Sunday for a $5 donation. Times vary.

Offerings also will include crew demonstrations of maneuvers, seamanship and cannon fire on the weekend with tickets ranging from $42 to $79.

The Daily Pilot rode along on Lady Washington’s journey Wednesday from Dana Point to Newport Beach and will have a more detailed account online Thursday and in Friday’s print edition.

Nautical history buffs can examine every rope and grommet on both ships, while “Pirates of the Caribbean” fans who board Lady Washington will stand on the same deck as captain Jack Sparrow — the vessel appeared as the HMS Interceptor in the film franchise’s first installment, “The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

The ships are docked at Newport Sea Base at 1931 W. Coast Hwy.
