Dave Min, Tyler Diep and Cottie Petrie-Norris lead recent campaign fundraising in local races for state seats

Published disclosures from the California secretary of state’s office show that candidate Dave Min leads the recent campaign fundraising race for this year’s 37th state Senate District election.

Min (D-Irvine), a UC Irvine professor who lost a bid for Congress in 2018, raised $504,576 from 1,656 contributions from Jan. 1, 2019, to Jan. 18, 2020, when the last reporting period ended, according to campaign disclosure statements.

During the same period, his opponents — incumbent John Moorlach (R-Costa Mesa) and Costa Mesa Mayor Katrina Foley, a Democrat — raised $446,864 and $431,547, respectively. Moorlach’s overall war chest for his 2020 campaign — which began accepting donations at the tail end of 2016 — had $840,787 in contributions.

The district includes Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Costa Mesa, as well as parts of Irvine, Lake Forest, Laguna Woods, Orange, Tustin and Villa Park.

In the race for the 74th state Assembly District seat , campaign finance documents show incumbent Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Laguna Beach) leading the field with more than $1.1 million during the reporting period.

Newport Beach Councilwoman Diane Dixon, a Republican, raised $350,544, documents show.

Kelly Ernby (R-Huntington Beach), who began accepting contributions in April, raised $162,411.

The 74th District includes Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach, Irvine and Laguna Woods.

In the neighboring 72nd Assembly District, incumbent Tyler Diep (R-Westminster) raised $635,409 during the reporting period, according to campaign disclosure documents.

Former state Sen. Janet Nguyen (R-Fountain Valley), who began fundraising in December for her Assembly campaign, brought in $151,652. Nguyen also has received $1,500 toward her Janet Nguyen for Senate 2022 campaign.

The 72nd District includes Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Seal Beach, Westminster, parts of Huntington Beach, Garden Grove and Santa Ana and the unincorporated areas Midway City and Rossmoor.
