Orange Coast Gakuen Japanese Language School will host a virtual open house on May 1 to acquaint interested community members with its program, which includes reading, writing, vocabulary, academic events, classroom experience and Japanese cultural activities.

The weekend language school is located at Grace Lutheran Christian School, 5172 W. McFadden Ave., Huntington Beach. Classes for the school’s 2021-22 school year, which begin in the fall, are open to students ages 3 to 4, 5 to 18 and adults.

Students enrolling during open house hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 1, will receive a 50% discount on their registration fees. Staff will be on hand to answer questions in Japanese and English during the virtual open house.

Four scholarships to be awarded by PFLAG Newport Beach

PFLAG Newport Beach is awarding up to four scholarships to graduating LGBTQIA high school seniors.

Each $500 scholarship will be given to students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or straight ally (LGBTQIA) and who will be continuing in higher education. Applicants must have a 2.0 minimum grade-point average and be a resident of Orange County.

The scholarships were made available through donations from Newport Beach residents Carrie Freitas and Braunwyn Windham-Burke.

Sherman Library & Gardens seeks 2 high school summer interns

Motivated teens about to enter their junior or senior year in high school who have an interest in horticulture and botany are invited to apply for one of two summer internships at Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar.

The intern program is a mix of educational experiences including hands-on learning sessions and field trips. The interns will work alongside the gardens’ horticulturists, staff, volunteers and docents.

This is a six- to eight-week paid internship during July and August for 20 to 30 hours per week.

Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher grade-point average. Applications should include a cover letter and typed essay, 500 words or less, on why this internship appeals to you. Why is horticulture, the environment and/or plants important to you?
