Firefighters responded to a structure fire believed to have broken out Sunday night in a second-floor bedroom on the 3000 block of Costa Mesa’s Summerset Circle while the homeowners were temporarily off site, officials reported Monday.

Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Chris Coates said the department received a call at 7:45 p.m. from a neighbor who reported seeing smoke issuing from the residence. Four engine companies and two truck companies responded, as Orange County Fire Authority and Fountain Valley Fire Department assisted.

The first responders reported smoke showing from the second story of the home, where Coates said two individuals resided.

“We had reports from a neighbor that an older gentlemen lived there,” he said. “We knocked on the door and there was no answer, so we immediately went into rescue mode.”

A search of the property found the home to be unoccupied at the time of the fire. Coates said a male homeowner had been running errands and returned to a scene of a fire fight.

The bulk of the fire was in an upstairs bedroom and had begun to spread beyond the room when crews arrived.

“Our firefighters were able to mount a quick and aggressive fire attack and prevent the fire from spreading to the entire second floor,” Coates said.

Flames were extinguished quickly, in about 15 minutes. While the two residents were displaced, they declined assistance from the Red Cross, Coates said. The exact cause of the fire was still under investigation Monday.
