Conway takes third in SCGA amateur event

Steve Conway of Newport Beach shot a final round 72 to finish with
284, a four-over par, for third place in the 105th Southern
California Golf Association amateur championship at Hillcrest Country
Club in Los Angeles Sunday.
Conway, who plays on the UCLA men’s golf team, finished as runner
up to Bruins teammate Roy Moon last year.
Tim Hogarth of Northridge won the event, shooting a 69 in the
final round to finish one-under par 279 (71-71-68-69). Scott McGihon
of Bermuda Dunes came in second with a final-round 70, and final
score of 283.
Conway’s scores were 70-71-71-72. He shot the 70-71 Friday, when
he finished in a three-way tie for second place in the first round.
Newport finishes sixth
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team lost to
La Costa Canyon, 58-54, to finish sixth in the George Yardley Summer
Cage Classic at Newport Harbor Sunday.
The Sailors finished 2-2 and were fifth of the 24 teams in the
tournament.
Estancia, with new coach Jason Simco, defeated Savanna, 72-51, to
finish with a 2-2 record in the tourney. Corona del Mar lost to
Foothill to close out its tournament competition with a 1-3 record.
El Toro won the George Yardley Classic, defeating Villa Park,
56-54, on a game-winning shot to beat the buzzer.
Parada solid in summer
* BASKETBALL: Former UC Irvine center Adam Parada scored 12 points
and grabbed 11 rebounds in Sacramento’s 91-80 loss to Dallas in the
Summer Pro League at the Pyramid in Long Beach Saturday.
Parada was 6 of 9 from the field in 26 minutes of action.
