UC Santa Barbara selected seven local residents for its Dean’s
Honors List for the spring quarter. Costa Mesa residents Sean Rorden
(communications) and Courtney Jones (law and society), and Newport
Beach residents Robert Coldren (English), Nicholas Ferrall (film
studies), Joel Furman (law and society), Justin Mathena (computer
science) and Joseph Weiland (pre-biology) each posted at least a 3.75
grade point average in the College of Letters and Science ... Cal
State Fullerton student Cathleen Hallock of Costa Mesa was one of 25
students in the California State University system to receive a
2004-2005 Edison International Teachers for Tomorrow scholarship. The
$5,000 awards are designed to help students seeking teaching
credentials. Students were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA and
demonstrate financial need ... Miles Ellis Yourman, a Dartmouth
College student from Newport Beach, has been cited by the school for
outstanding achievement in Native American Studies 35 during the
spring term. According to Dartmouth officials, such citations are
rare and are typically given to only a few undergraduates per term
... Samantha Rose Grumman, daughter of Barry and Jan Grumman of
Newport Beach, graduated with honors from Vassar College in
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She also received the Man-Sheng Chen Scholarly
Award for excellence in Chinese studies ... U.S. Bancorp has selected
Whitney Loufek of Costa Mesa to receive a $1,000 scholarship as part
of the U.S. Bancorp Educational Awards Program. Loufek, who will
study at UC Irvine next year, was selected based on academic
performance, participation in school and community activities and
leadership potential, a U.S. Bancorp spokesman said.
