Police to set up DUI checkpoint on Friday

The traffic division of the Newport Beach Police Department will

operate a sobriety checkpoint from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday

on Coast Highway and Irvine Terrace Drive. The checkpoint will be in

the west-bound lane.

The checkpoint location was selected based upon DUI-related

accidents and arrests in the area, officials said.

The checkpoint will be clearly marked, and vehicles will be

selected to move through the check lanes on a random basis to ensure

objectivity and timeliness. Motorists will be greeted and given an

information brochure on driving while intoxicated, prepared by the

police department.
