Thieves hit two local banks within hour

Two unrelated bank robberies were reported in Huntington Beach

inside of an hour Friday, police said.

No one was hurt in either heist, Huntington Beach Sgt. Dave

Bunetta said, adding that police have not linked the robbers in the

crimes.

The first robbery happened at about 1:30 p.m. at the Bank of

America inside an Albertsons on Beach Boulevard. Police said a man

carrying a cloth lunch bag walked up to a teller and passed a note

demanding money and saying there was a bomb inside the bag. The man

escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash and left the bag on the

counter.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad was called to

inspect the package and determined it did not contain a bomb, Bunetta

said.

Police described the robber an African-American man between 30 and

40 years old, 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds. He reportedly wore

dark pants, a white shirt, a fisherman-style hat and a black backpack

during the robbery.

The second robbery occurred at the California National Bank on

Edinger Avenue close to an hour later. A man demanded cash from a

teller and ran out with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Witnesses did not see any weapon or getaway car, police said.

The robber is described by police as a Latino man in his late 30s,

about 5-foot-8 and weighing 150 pounds. He was reportedly unshaven

and wore a bright blue shirt and a matching baseball cap with Nike

logos, police said.

Agency reeling after tragic death

A Huntington Beach police officer’s daughter died Friday of major

head trauma after a crash in Laguna Beach on July 8.

Cheyenne McKean, 5, of Aliso Viejo died after a collision

involving a Ford Explorer, driven by her mother, and a Honda Civic.

The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of El Toro

Road and the San Joaquin Hills Toll Road. Cheyenne died at 2:35 a.m.

Friday from injuries suffered in the crash, according to officials

from the Orange County Coroner’s division.

The Honda was being driven north off the toll road off-ramp when

it crashed into the Ford, which was being driven west on El Toro

Road, Laguna Beach police Sgt. Guy Miller said. Cheyenne’s 3-year-old

sister was taken to Mission Hospital to be treated for serious

injuries. Her mother, and another of her children, suffered minor

injuries, police said. The driver of the Honda was taken to

Saddleback Hospital with minor injuries. Laguna Beach police did not

release names of the injured.

Cheyenne’s father, Scott McKean, is a longtime member of the

Huntington Beach Police Department, and the tragedy has been felt

throughout the agency.

“I don’t know how you explain it,” Huntington Beach Sgt. Dave

Bunetta said. “Everybody’s in shock here.”
