Golden West women’s club team takes title

The Golden West Water Polo Club women’s team was crowned champion of
the Sacramento Valley Invitational last weekend at UC Davis.
Golden West went undefeated in the 20-team tournament, earning
victories over South Africa (5-0), American River Sacramento Valley
(12-2), Great Lakes-Michigan (14-0) and Stanford Water Polo
Foundation (8-2) in pool play.
In championship round play, Golden West went up against a strong
Davis team and emerged with a 15-4 victory. Golden West next handled
Chino Hills Area Water Polo 10-2 in the semifinals. The win set up a
rematch with Stanford in the championship, which Golden West won 8-2
to claim the championship trophy.
Monique Blanchard led Golden West’s scoring attack in the
tournament with 17 goals. Mary Chatigny scored 14 goals, and Alison
Riddle had six goals.
Golden West Water Polo will host the TruWest Tournament this
weekend at the Olympic Water Polo Training Center in Los Alamitos.
The TruWest Invitational is an eight-team tournament that will
highlight play from top-seeded teams scheduled to compete at the
National Olympic Water Polo competition July 28 through Aug. 1 in
Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Golden West is also scheduled to compete at the 2004 20/Under
Women’s National Championship July 20 through July 22 in Atherton.
