Fundraiser will be a ‘Zoofari’

Share

JIM DE BOOM

The Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo will host its 12th annual black tie

and safari attire gala, “Zoofari 2004 ... Party ‘til the Cows Come

Home,” from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Aug. 14, according to Newport Beach

resident Debbie Newmeyer.

Proceeds from the $175-per-person ticket will benefit the Crean

Family Farm, the newest and largest attraction ever built at the

Santa Ana Zoo. The farm, with eight structures on more than two acres

is an interactive children’s zoo that allows visitors to explore,

touch and feed farmyard animals.

More than 400 people are expected to attend the evening dinner

dance being held in the tropical jungles of the Santa Ana Zoo. It

will feature a live and silent auction and a feast provided by the

Sundried Tomato Cafe, Memphis Cafe at Santora, Jason’s Catered

Events, the Revere House, Volare Trattoria, Whole Foods Market, Gallo

wines and Country Garden Caterers. For more information or to

purchase tickets, call (714) 953-8555, Ext. 13.

NEW WAY TO DONATE BLOOD

“Jim, I wanted you to be aware of the U.S. Blood Donors program

and the contact that I’ve just set up with Steve Gilbert and Tavish

MacGregor,” writes Dick Freeman of the Exchange Club of Newport

Harbor. “This U.S. Blood Donors program has a totally new approach to

blood donation. They advocate that blood be stored in the human body

and not removed for separate storage, where it can only remain usable

for 42 days.

“Tavish started this program shortly after [Sept. 11, 2001], when

there was a huge surge in donations. Almost 300,000 pints of blood

ended up lost and not used. Essentially, this new approach uses

computer registry to enlist donors and then harvest blood on an

as-needed basis -- pretty smart, I think!! Our National Exchange Club

was the first service organization to endorse this program, and I’d

like to see all service clubs join hands together on this. By the

way, I met Tavish through Pat Boone, who is a strong supporter along

with Gov. Schwarzenegger and many others. Contact me for other

details or questions at interpac2000@yahoo.com.”

LION OF THE YEAR

Joan Parks, the Harbor Mesa Lions’ immediate past president,

recently named member Marianne Allen as the club’s “Lion of the

Year.” Marianne headed up the committee to form the new Leos Club at

Costa Mesa High School and chaired the district student speakers

contest. She will also serve as the Lions District 4-L4 cabinet

secretary for the 2004-05 year. Congratulations, Marianne.

HOMELAND SECURITY

The four local Rotary Clubs will have an opportunity to hear Rep.

Chris Cox, who will be the featured speaker on Aug. 12 at the noon

luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport Irvine at the Radisson

Hotel. While his official subject is homeland security, I suspect he

will have much to say about the current presidential campaign as

well. Greg Arbues, Newport Irvine club president, says guests are

welcome, but they need to make reservations by calling him at (714)

978-1300, Ext. 109.

WORTH REPEATING

From the Thought for Today, provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport

Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “A person should have enough

education so they don’t have to look up to anyone. They should also

have enough to be wise not to look down.”
