10-and-under team just misses out on bronze

The Laguna Beach Water Polo Club’s 10-and-Under coed team finished fourth at the S & R Sports Junior Olympics age-group water polo tournament that concluded Aug. 3 in Irvine.

In the Platinum flight, Laguna played for the bronze medal but was edged by Team Vegas/Henderson of Nevada, 7-6.

The 10-U coed title was won by San Diego Shores, which defeated Huntington Beach, 12-8, in the gold medal match.

In other news from the Junior Olympics, USA Water Polo announced the All-Americans and All-Tournament Teams for the 2008 S & R Sport Junior Olympics. All-Americans were selected for the Platinum Flights and All-Tournament Teams were selected for the Gold Flights. Selection to either team was based off team finish in each division and athletes were submitted by their respective club coach.

USA Water Polo listed the following Laguna Beach club players as making the teams:

Boys’ 14-Under division: Nolan McConnell and goalie Erik Henrikson were named to the boys’ 14 Platinum All-American Team and teammate Dylan Payne was named a First Team Spare. Laguna won the bronze medal in the 48-team boys’ 14-U division.

Boys’ 12-U division: Corey Colapinto and Jack Dodson both were named Honorable Mention on the boys’ 12 Platinum All-American Team.

Girls’ 14-Under division: Candyce Schroeder and Kelsey Thornton were named to the girls’ 14 Platinum All-American Team and teammate Kayla Colapinto was named a First Team Spare.

Girls’ 12-Under division: Sandonica Rodriguez was selected as a First Team Spare on the girls’ 12 Platinum All American Team.
