The Laguna Beach Water Polo 12-and-under girls’ team won the Commerce tournament over the weekend, beating three teams in a single day of competition Saturday.

The girls started off slowly in the first game against Tustin-based SOCAL, but found their rhythm by halftime and won, 11-1.

They then topped tournament host and powerhouse, Commerce, 12-4, although Commerce created some matchup problems.

Laguna faced a familiar Los Alamitos foe in the finals, but won, 14-3, despite having just one substitute.

“I am pleasantly surprised as to how well this young team is doing at this point in the season,” Coach Chad Beeler said. “We have a lot of girls that are new to water polo yet we have taken second place at every other tournament we have entered this year, and today we came out the champs. I am eager to see how they do at the San Diego County Cup.

The County Cup takes place the first weekend of May.

Contributing to the Laguna victory were team members Holly Parker, Aria Fischer, Maia Borisoff, Makenzie Fischer, Katie Stanton, Haley Evans, Julia Cox-Kruger, Daniela Lucidi, Annabella Baldridge, Sandonica Mwangi, Brighid Burnes and Angelique Begay.
