Locals to compete at Tournament of Champions

Laguna Beach High alumna Rachel Wacholder, as well as Laguna resident Whitney Pavlik, will compete this weekend at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Tour Tournament of Champions, in Mason, Ohio. Wacholder missed last weekend’s tournament in Chicago with a shoulder injury, but she and partner Kerri Walsh were awarded a wild-card entry into this weekend’s 16-team, double-elimination tournament. They are seeded No. 6.

Pavlik and Mason, who have played together for two tournaments, are seeded No. 13. Mason, 38, has announced the tournament will be the final event of her 15-year career.

Pavlik and Mason finished 13th in Chicago.

Basketball registrations underway

Registration for the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach boys’ basketball league has begun and continues through September.

The league is for children grades kindergarten through ninth. Registration may be done in person at the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Main Branch, at 1085 Laguna Canyon Road. Practices begin in November, and the season starts in December after AYSO soccer.

All participants must be members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach; club membership fee is $150 per year. The league fee is $100 per player and includes a new uniform. A $25 late fee apples after Sept. 30. League sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Snowboard video to premiere in Laguna

The Blue Laguna Restaurant and Lounge will be the first U.S. stop for the latest installment of Bozwreck Snowboards’ video series “Bozwreck 3000,” at 9 p.m. Saturday.

The latest video installment features riding from Nate Bozung, Matty Ryan, Cale Zima, Keegan Valakia and Anthony Herron, among others. Bozung and Ryan are founders of Bozwreck.

There will be a $5 raffle at the premiere, with snowboard outerwear prizes and the grand prize of an early-released copy of the video.
