A teenager suspected by Newport Beach police of being the lone gunman that got away during a search last month near Fashion Island was killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, authorities confirmed.

Dalton Rahman, 18, was shot by Los Angeles County Sheriffs SWAT team members when he wrested a gun away from one of them as they tried to arrest him, according to a statement released by the sheriff’s department Nov. 6.

Newport Beach police said Rahman was the man who eluded capture in early October, when officers went to a parking lot near Fashion Island where three men were reported acting suspiciously.

A person in the area spotted three men and took a picture of them with her cell phone. It spooked the group, and each went different ways. When police got into the area, the three ran. Two were soon arrested.

One was a 16-year-old from Laguna Niguel and the other was an 18-year-old from San Clemente. Police found a backpack with a Tec-9 pistol inside where the men were originally hanging out, police said.

A Beretta handgun was also found nearby.

Rahman was driving in a stolen car when police confronted him in Los Angeles. There was a bulletproof vest and other police equipment inside the car, officials said.
