Youth Scene: Breakers edged by Fountain Valley

On Sunday in Tustin, a National Junior Basketball championship series Division I girls’ game went down to the wire. After Laguna Beach led for most of the game, Fountain Valley turned it on late and pulled out a 27-25 victory.

Cheyann Pendergrass had 11 points, three rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block for the Fountain Valley Lions. Jenna Miramontez also played well and led the team in points (12) and rebounds (eight).

Lions Coach Melisa Duffey was proud of the win and the team.

“We played great defensively and pulled through in the end,” Duffey said.

Laguna Beach played well as a team and had several leaders. Kyra Humphries had six points and a rebound, assist, block and steal.

Sarina Strickland was the Breakers’ top scorer with nine points. She also had a pair of rebounds and one block.

Both Fountain Valley and Laguna Beach are 1-1 in the Championship Series tournament.
