Palmer, Team USA start on winning note

The U.S. Volleyball Girls’ Youth National Team, which features Laguna Beach High sophomore setter Allison Palmer, won its first two matches at the 2010 North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Federation (NORCECA) Girls’ Youth Continental Championship in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Team USA, ranked second in its age division and the four-time defending champion of the biennial event, is in Pool C along with Canada, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. The U.S. team won its opener against the Dominican Republic, 25-12, 25-18, 25-15, then dominated Jamaica, 25-4, 25-7, 25-4, Wednesday at the Guatemala Dome.

Palmer had 11 serves without an error in the match against the Dominican Republic.

Team USA faced Canada on Thursday in a key match.

Lawn bowling open house is May 8

There’ll be cool moves on the green when the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club hosts its annual Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 8. The Club, which was established in Laguna Beach in 1931, will be open to the public that day for free demonstrations, $1 hot dogs and drinks, and a chance to meet some the LBLBC’s own local tournament champions and top players. Those wanting to try their skill should wear flat-sole, tennis-type shoes; equipment will be provided.

A special, discounted membership rate of $125 will be available to those who sign up during the Open House event. The regular annual membership rate is $175 per year, which includes a $50 initiation fee. The Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club is at 455 Cliff Drive.

Volleyball alumni game is May 7

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball program is holding its annual alumni game May 7 at Dugger Gym. Tickets are $10, and $5 for students. There will be a silent auction at 5 p.m. and the first match starts at 5:30 p.m.

The alumni vs. varsity match is at 7:30 p.m.

Dinner will be provided by In-N-Out and there will be raffles for prizes.
