Breakers offer Summer XC Camp

It’s just the end of the second week of July, but the cross-country season is about to get underway at Laguna Beach High.

The Breakers’ cross-country program is offering a Summer XC Camp that begins Monday. Registration for the camp is being taken through the city’s recreation department. The camp starts at 8 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at El Morro, Thursdays at Laguna Beach High and Friday at Alta Laguna Park.

A cross-country parents’ meeting is at 6 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Laguna Beach High library.

The program is coming off a highly successful 2009 season.

Last fall, the Laguna Beach boys’ team won the Orange Coast League championship, CIF Southern Section Division IV title and the CIF State Division IV crown. The boys’ program has won two state titles in the last six seasons. The girls’ team also won the Orange Coast League title, finished sixth at the CIF Division IV meet and qualified for the CIF State Meet, where the Breakers earned a fifth-place finish.

Breakers boys’ Coach Scott Wittkop also released the regular season meet schedule for the fall. The Breakers open the 2010 season Sept. 11 at the Laguna Hills Invitational.

Thurs., Nov. 4: Orange Coast League Finals (at Godinez High)

Sat., Nov. 13: CIF Prelims (at Mt. SAC, varsity only)

Sat., Nov. 20: CIF Finals(at Mt. SAC, varsity only)

Sat., Nov. 27: CIF State Championships (at Woodward Park, Fresno)

The Laguna Beach cross-country program is headed by Wittkop, girls’ coach Steve Lalim and assistant coaches Carista Strickland, Ahman Bhatia and Greg Jones.
