Garbage, recycling delay for Labor Day

Waste Management of Orange County’s commercial and curbside residential trash and recycling pick-up schedule will be delayed by one day and will not operate on Sept. 6, in observance of Labor Day. Receptacles should be placed for pickup one day later than usual.

“Customers who usually receive service on Monday will instead receive it Tuesday, and so on throughout the week, with Friday’s customers receiving service on Saturday,” said David Ross, director of public sector services.

All Waste Management of Orange County operations will be closed, including transfer stations in Irvine and Orange on Sept. 6, with normal operations resuming Sept. 7. For more information, visit https://www.wmorangecounty.com.

Garden Club program on organic food

“The Transition Movement and Laguna’s Organic Food Gardens” will be the topic of the 9:30 a.m. Sept. 10 meeting of the Laguna Beach Garden Club, at Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.

Max Isles, president of Transition Laguna, and Sean McCracken, leader of the food group, will speak to club members.

Isles will give an overview of the organization’s goals and strategies in Laguna Beach. McCracken will talk about the individual Transition Laguna food gardens that have been planted by organization members and what they’re doing with the produce.

Empowering women meeting slated

The American Assn. of University Women-Laguna Beach will host Membership Appreciation Day from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 12, at the Laguna College of Art and Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road. The new Laguna Beach Unified School District Supt. Sherine Smith will attend the gathering and address the group.

The program, titled “Empowering Women: Locally, Nationally, and Internationally,” will be led by writer and promoter of women in the arts Cece Sloan. The presentation will include segments from the documentary “Taking Root,” followed by a discussion. The film is about 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, whose program of planting trees in Kenya evolved into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights and defend democracy. Maathai was the first environmentalist and the first African American woman to win a Nobel Prize.

Computer classes offered next month

Free computer classes will be offered in September at Laguna Beach Library, 363 Glenneyre St.

A Basic Computer Skills Class will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Sept. 15, 16, and 17.

A Beyond the Basics Class will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Sept. 22, 23, and 24.
