College Roundup: Zags stifle ‘Eaters

SPOKANE, Wash. — The UC Irvine baseball team managed four hits, all singles, against Gonzaga’s Marco Gonzales, who went the distance in a 3-0 nonconference victory Sunday.

The shutout was the second straight for UCI, which was swept in the three-game series.

The back-to-back shutouts are the first for UCI since 2003.

UCI (14-6), on a four-game losing streak, is ranked No. 19 in the USA Today/ESPN poll, slipping eight spots from last week’s ranking.

UCI was outscored, 10-1, in by the Bulldogs (13-7-1), and the ‘Eaters managed just 16 hits in the series, with a D.J. Crumlich double on Friday the lone extra-base hit.

Freshman Andrew Thurman allowed two earned runs on five hits in six innings to take the loss. He falls to 1-2.

UCI returns to action today at 3 p.m. at USC.

Biola 9, Vanguard 8

COSTA MESA — The host Lions rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning, but Biola answered in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Monday.

Jason Dovel was two for four with one home run and four runs batted in to pace a 10-hit attack by the Lions (13-14, 9-8 in conference), who committed four errors that led to three unearned runs.

Brandon Pasante and Jacob Domingos also had two hits apiece for the Lions.

Biola is 18-10, 12-4.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Cal-Nevada Championships

CLAREMONT — UC Irvine junior Charles Jock won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 47.18 seconds Sunday at Claremont McKenna.

It was a meet record and the third straight 800 title at the meet for Jock, who was named the Athlete of the Meet for the second consecutive year.

Senior Colin Hacker won the 1,500 in 3:51.41. Teammate Sam Hyams was second (3:53.37).

UCI finished second in the 22-team meet with 96 points, 59 behind victorious Long Beach State.

UCI’s 1,600 relay team, anchored by Jock, finished second.

UCI junior Nick Jennings was third in the pole vault (16 feet, 43/4 inches) and Napoleon Green was fourth in the 400 hurdles (52.56).

Championships

CLAREMONT — UC Irvine sophomore Ericka Nowell won the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute, 0.23 seconds Sunday at Claremont McKenna.

The mark matches Kristine Bostick (1998) for the best in UCI history.

UCI’s Golde Ibia was second in the 100 hurdles (13.79) and Chloe Fata was second in the 1,500 in 4:32.60 to help UCI finish fourth among 23 teams.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Anteater Invitational

DOVE CANYON — UC Irvine’s Patty Chawalitmetha is tied for seventh and the Anteaters are tied for third after 36 holes Monday of the 54-hole event at Dove Canyon Country Club.

Chawalitmetha is seven-over par, six shots behind leader Lauren Taylor of Portland State.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pacific 4, UC Irvine 3

IRVINE — Kristina Smith and Franziska Goettsching both won in singles and doubles for the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Sunday.

UCI fell to 7-10, 1-3 in conference.

MEN’S GOLF

Santiago Canyon 373, Orange Coast 376

CHINO — Freshman Jeff Fuzzard shot one-under-par 71 in the Pirates’ Orange Empire Conference match at El Prado Golf Course’s Butterfield Stage Course Monday.

Lyon Lazare shot 75 for OCC (6-2 in conference).
