Water district seeks commissioners

The Laguna Beach County Water District is accepting applications for two comission seats. Applications must be submitted by May 27. For more information, call (949) 494-1041 or go to 306 Third St.

City manager’s weekly update

The appeal period for the coastal development permit for the lifeguard headquarters and public restroom project expired March 24, meaning the permit is now final, according to the California Coastal Commission. City Manager John Pietig announced the expiration in his regular Friday Update.

The Animal Shelter renovation is on schedule to be completed in July, Pietig wrote. The masonry walls are done and the roof framing and in-floor radiant heating system installation started last week. The shelter also received a $362,000 donation from Marjorie Nelson’s estate, which will fund the renovation.

“A plan for the beautification of Broadway between Cliff Drive and Forest Avenue was approved by the Planning Commission [March 30],” Pietig wrote. The design includes enhanced landscaping and public art. Construction should begin next spring. Up to 74% of the costs are funded through a Federal Transportation Enhancement grant, according to Pietig’s update.

The Arts Commission on Monday reviewed 37 entries to the annual banner competition and selected designs from Al Esquerra, Elliott Whalen and Cliff Wassmann, he wrote. The banners will go on display throughout the city

Depression Help

The Susi Q Senior Center recently received a small grant to assist senior women with depression, anxiety and other issues. The center will offer counseling either in residents’ homes or at the center. For more information about this free program, call Kathleen Wenger, LMFT at (949) 497-2441.

Earth Day almost here

The Laguna Canyon Foundation will celebrate Earth Day from 8 to 11 a.m. April 16. Volunteers can join the foundation and OC Parks in removing invasive plant species and restoring native habitat. Meet at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Nix Nature Center, 384 Legion St., or Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, Ranger Headquarters, 28373 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Niguel.
