H.S. sailing teams advance

Newport Harbor High School’s Sailing Team placed second and Corona del Mar High School’s Sailing team placed third, behind first-place Point Loma High School, in the Pacific Coast Interscholastic Sailing Assn.’s Baker Elimination Regatta, held at the Lido Isle Yacht Club on Easter weekend.

These three teams qualified to represent the Pacific Coast Region in the National High School Team Racing Championship, the Baker Regatta, in Norfolk, Va., on May 21-22.

Nine teams from across California competed against each other with three boats on three boats in a single elimination round robin, with three teams being eliminated by Saturday afternoon.

The remaining six teams sailed a double round robin until 6 p.m. Saturday and all-day Easter Sunday, concluding at 4 p.m., with a total of 68 races. More than 80 high school sailors and more than 100 spectators lined the docks of Lido Isle Yacht Club to participate in and watch the two-day event.

The two teams included the following sailors. From NHHS: Kieran Chung, Nicole Grice, Ryan Davidson, Francesca Cappellini, Cooper Scott, Erin Kincaid, Daniel Segerblom, Greer Wattson and Shelly Grice. And from CdM High: Tyler MacDonald, Brooke Donahue, Michael Dahl, Madison Vitarelli, Michael Madigan, Chloe Dapp, Hannah Callas, and Brett Potter.
