Man arrested after escaping supervised release

Charges were filed this week against a man who years ago set up an illegal Newport Beach law firm, according to an FBI representative.

Harold David Goldstein, 65, of Clayton, Mo., became a fugitive after escaping his halfway house in Los Angeles, which was his supervised release from federal prison, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

According to Daily Pilot archives, Goldstein set up an illegal firm in Newport in 2002. He has a history of practicing law illegally and setting up other phony firms, Eimiller said.

Goldstein is suspected of setting up another illegal law firm while he was a fugitive.

He was arrested April 1 after escaping from custody Feb. 3, according to the indictment filed against him this week.

Goldstein previously pled guilty to making false claims to an FBI agent about suspicious Medicare billing practices, according to a January statement released by the U.S. Department of Justice.

He is set to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday morning for arraignment.
