No one hurt in peninsula fire

Three people where asleep in a Balboa Peninsula apartment when a kitchen fire broke out over the weekend, authorities said.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 500 block of East Balboa Boulevard at 1:53 a.m. Saturday, Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz said in a statement.

No one was injured, and the fire was contained to one unit of the apartment building, according to the statement.

Damages were estimated to be about $80,000.

The source of the blaze was pinpointed to near the stove top, although the specific cause was still under investigation.
