Thousands gather for Scenic 5K run in CdM

Thousands of racers, walkers and spectators gathered along Ocean Boulevard this morning for the 31st Annual Scenic 5K, a Corona del Mar event that reflects athleticism and community spirit.

“I like seeing everybody,” said Laura Palitz, a Corona del Mar resident who said she beat her 5K time from a year ago. “I run this because it’s our town, and I love our town. I run this town every day.”

Palitz ran with her daughter, Fiona, 12.

“I’ve been running since I was in the Dolphin Dash,” she said. “You see a lot of people.”

Mayor Nancy Gardner attended, opening the race and watching the racers from near the starting line. Fire Chief Scott Poster and his wife, Barbara, participated in the 2-mile walk.

“It’s good for me to walk and to learn the streets,” said Poster, who became chief in February.
