Police sweep nets 6 arrests

Police arrested six suspects Tuesday during an eight-hour sweep through Costa Mesa to make sure probationers were complying with the conditions of their release.

Costa Mesa police have been working with the Orange County Probation Department to regularly make rounds through the city to check on convicts on probation.

Officers contacted 20 probationers. Nine were out of jail on the Post-Release Community Supervision (PCS) program that puts nonviolent offenders eligible for parole under the supervision of local authorities, instead of the state.

The PCS program is part of California’s “realignment plan,” which is meant to comply with a court order to ease overcrowding in state prisons. Four of Tuesday’s six arrestees were free as part of the PCS program. Officers held all four on probation violations and one also faced possible drug charges, according to the department.

Officers arrested two other probationers, one on drug paraphernalia charges, the other on a burglary warrant.

Police did not identify any of the individuals arrested, but they were all men ages 25 to 52.

Costa Mesa police regularly participated in the sweeps in 2013. Officers arrested 11 probationers in May, seven in June and nine in September.
