73-year-old Fountain Valley bicyclist dies in hospital after collision at Huntington Beach border
A 73-year-old Fountain Valley man on Tuesday died in the hospital from injuries sustained during a collision that occurred that morning in a crosswalk at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Brookhurst Street on the border with Huntington Beach, police reported.
Fountain Valley police were called to the scene shortly before 7 a.m., according to a release issued by the department Tuesday afternoon. They learned a silver Ford F-350 had been making a left turn from eastbound Garfield Avenue onto northbound lanes of Brookhurst Street when it struck the bicyclist, the release indicated.
The victim was identified later that day by FVPD as Dac Them Kieu. He had been transported to a nearby hospital following the collision and was listed in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, whom police described as a 65-year-old man from Huntington Beach, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. His name was not being released to the public. Northbound Brookhurst was temporarily closed to traffic to accommodate an investigation, which is still ongoing.
Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision. Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact the Fountain Valley Police Department’s traffic bureau at (714) 593-4481 (Incident No. 22-22611).
