Sea Kings rout University, 11-2

The Corona del Mar High baseball team collected 19 hits, leading to
an 11-2 Pacific Coast League victory over host University Tuesday.
Barrett Sprowl went 4 for 5 with three runs, three doubles and an
RBI. Sprowl now has nine doubles on the season. Todd Macklin, Wess
Presson, Josh Bradbury, Jeritt Thayer, Jake Lemmerman and Blake
Contant contributed two hits each.
Macklin smacked a home run, a solo blast that went about 420 feet
to lead off Corona del Mar’s five-run fifth inning. In addition,
Contant struck out five and allowed four hits and no walks in his six
innings of work for the Sea Kings (4-4, 2-0 in league).
Eagles handle Mesa
* TENNIS: Estancia High’s boys tennis team took eight of nine
singles sets and coasted to a 14-4 Golden West League victory over
visiting Costa Mesa Tuesday.
Scott Braunsdorf and Benny Edles each swept in singles for
Estancia (4-5, 3-2 in league). Edles needed a tiebreaker to defeat
Mesa’s No. 1 singles player, David Lee, who claimed one set.
Bryce McKendry and partner Nick Cox claimed all three doubles sets
for the Eagles while John Dang and Brian Nguyen teamed for two
doubles wins for Mesa.
Forfeits benefit Pirates
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College men’s tennis team was the
beneficiary of two forfeits and defeated visiting Cypress, 5-4, in an
Orange Empire Conference match Tuesday.
Cypress forfeited the final singles and doubles sets, allowing
Coast (2-9, 2-5 in the OEC) to gain the needed points for the
victory. Cypress had earned four victories compared to Coast’s three.
Mike Manus swept at No. 3 singles for Coast while Mike Hoevel and
Scott Fielder teamed to defeat Eric Diamond and Jun Park, 6-1, 6-3,
in doubles.
Mesa edges Ocean View
* GOLF: Costa Mesa High’s boys golf team began Golden West League
play with a 238-239 victory over Ocean View on the par-36 Classic
Course at Miles Square Golf Club in Fountain Valley on Tuesday.
Costa Mesa’s Brian Beach and Ocean View’s Tom Amphlett tied for
medalist honors with a pair of 40s. Beach chipped in from 20 feet for
birdie on the par-4 fifth hole. Robert Engel and Al Rodriguez each
carded 46s while Brett Via tallied a 48 to go with a 57 from Robin
Schuppert for Mesa (3-6, 1-0 in league).
Eagles outshoot Orange
* GOLF: Marcus Sostak shot 40 to earn medalist honors and lead the
host Estancia High boys golf team to a 218-226 victory over Orange to
begin Golden West League play Tuesday at the par-36 Mesa Verde
Country Club. Sostak had two birdies.
Nick Lettieri and Jason Les each carded 44 while Austin Serr and
Greg Les each shot 45 for the Eagles (5-2).
Pirates blank Chargers
* TENNIS: The visiting Orange Coast College women’s tennis team
swept all nine matches to cruise to a 9-0 Orange Empire Conference
victory over Cypress Tuesday.
The doubles teams of Leah Becker-Sabrina Tanamal and Kai
Moriyama-Thao Ho each swept their doubles matches, 8-0. Becker,
Tanamal and Moriyama each had a 6-0 victory in sweeping their singles
sets for OCC (11-1, 8-0 in the OEC).
Doubles delight for Sage
* TENNIS: Sage Hill School’s boys tennis team swept all nine
doubles matches en route to a 15-3 Academy League victory over
visiting Brethren Christian Tuesday.
Michael Cassel and Michael Garrison lost just one game in sweeping
at No. 2 doubles while the duos of Ian Livingston-Dan Chin and Tyler
Ross-Conrad Whitaker gave up just three games apiece.
Robert Wee, Julian Tooma and Ara Dimirjian each took two of three
singles sets for Sage (5-5, 2-1 in league), which moved up a spot to
No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division V rankings.
Sage staves off Calvary
* SOFTBALL: Lauren Neale and Allison Gonzalez each had two hits
apiece and the visiting Sage Hill School softball team held on to
defeat Calvary Chapel (Downey), 8-7, in a nonleague game Tuesday.
Calvary (1-7) had second and third with two outs in the bottom of
the seventh inning, but Sage starter Rebecca Hembarsky induced a line
out to shortstop Alexa Shitanishi to end the game. Sage improved to
3-5-1.
Joyce leads Lightning
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce tallied 16 kills
to lead the host Sage Hill School boys volleyball team to a 25-15,
25-17, 25-13 victory over Oxford Academy to begin Academy League play
Tuesday. Zach Singermann added seven kills for Sage Hill (5-0).
CdM loses at Oak Creek
* GOLF: Chris Arkin shot an even-par 36 to lead the host Northwood
High boys golf team to a 209-211 victory over Corona del Mar to begin
Pacific Coast League play Tuesday at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.
Ben Tilsen and Rob Ury led the way for CdM with a pair of 41s
followed by Alex Chikovani (42), Zach Rabinovich (43) and Matt Story
(44).
Cypress defeats Coast
* BASEBALL: A bases-clearing double by shortstop Freddy Rodriguez
with two outs in the sixth inning proved to be the difference for the
visiting Cypress College baseball team in an 8-5 Orange Empire
Conference win over Orange Coast Tuesday.
Coast starter Steven Johns (2-2) and Rodriguez battled in a
nine-pitch at-bat before Rodriguez slapped a fastball down the
right-field line.
The Pirates (7-12, 2-7 in the OEC) fought back from a 3-0
first-inning deficit to cut the lead to 4-3 after five innings.
Sailors lose opener
* GOLF: Foothill High’s boys golf team defeated host Newport
Harbor to begin Sea View League play, 199-205, Tuesday at the par-36
Big Canyon Country Club.
Mike Vackar led the Sailors (4-3) with a 39 followed by Brandon
Sowers, Rhett Palmer and Davis Pemstein, who each shot 41. Chris
Willard added a 43 for Newport.
Trojans edge Eagles
* SOFTBALL: The Estancia High softball team dropped a tough 6-5
decision to nonleague host University Monday in eight innings.
The Eagles (3-5) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead,
but Uni tied it in the sixth and plated a run on a groundout in the
eighth to prevail.
Estancia sophomore Be Diep was 3 for 5, while Allison Wyman, Lina
You and Heather Morton also had two hits apiece to bolster the
Eagles’ 12-hit attack.
Sage Hill stays hot
* GOLF: The Sage Hill School boys golf team remained unbeaten in
Academy League play by defeating Fairmont Prep, 208-232, Monday at
Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club in Irvine.
Josh Chen (2-over-par 38), Geoffrey Grant (40), Rob Greenfield
(41), John Neff (44) and Alex Cochran (45) all scored for the
Lightning (4-4, 3-0 in league).
