Oilers drill through Corona del Mar

Brothers Tom and Kevin Welch slammed 19 and 14 kills, respectively,
but the host Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team fell to
Huntington Beach, 17-25, 31-29, 23-25, 20-25, in a nonleague match
Wednesday.
Adam Smith had 11 digs while Dominic Rubino dished out 38 assists
for the Sea Kings (7-7), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section
Division II, who committed too many unforced errors, Coach Steve
Conti said. Ted Slaughter tallied three blocks.
Huntington Beach is ranked ninth in CIF Division I.
The Sea Kings begin Pacific Coast League play when they host
University Wednesday.
CdM enjoys success
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High’s boys tennis team swept all nine
singles sets and downed host Woodbridge, 11-7, in a nonleague CIF
Southern Section Division I showdown Wednesday.
The Sea Kings (8-0), ranked No. 1 Division I, led, 8-4, after two
rounds and held off the fourth-ranked Warriors (6-2). CdM has won 32
consecutive matches dating to last year, when they went undefeated to
claim the Division I title.
CdM junior Carsten Ball improved to 9-0 in singles while Wesley
Miller and Spencer Reitz also swept. Reitz lost just three games and
won the praised of Coach Tim Mang, who said the Warriors are the most
difficult team the Sea Kings have faced thus far.
Brennan Roberts and Alex Nguyen claimed two of three doubles sets
for the Sea Kings, who begin play in the All-American Invitational
tournament with an 8 a.m. match Friday against Jesuit at the
Palisades Tennis Club.

Sankey sparks Eagles
* VOLLEYBALL: Scott Sankey slammed a team-high 13 kills to lead the host Estancia High boys volleyball team to a 25-11, 25-23, 25-15 Golden West League victory over Saddleback Wednesday.
Josh Kornegay and Kris Hartwell each added seven kills for the
Eagles (9-1, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section
Division III.
Hartwell added six digs while Trevor Holmes dished out 34 assists
and tallied two service aces. Taylor Hankins also had two service
aces for Estancia, which hosts Santa Ana at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The Eagles host cross-town rival Costa Mesa at 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday.
Pirates remain perfect
* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore outside hitter Poyer Poia led all players
with 21 kills to lead the host Orange Coast College men’s volleyball
team to a 30-22, 25-30, 30-19, 30-12 victory over Palomar to remain
undefeated in Orange Empire Conference play.
Poia also amassed seven blocks while setter Mike Murphy tallied 45
assists. Uriah Seui tallied a career-high nine blocks for the Pirates
(12-1, 4-0 in the OEC).
OCC faces its toughest test this season when it travels to Irvine
Valley for a 6 p.m. match Friday.
Shue sets record in win
* SWIMMING: Sophomore Lexie Shue broke a school record
in the 200-yard freestyle to highlight the Corona del Mar High
girls swimming team’s 89-69 Pacific Coast League opening victory over
visiting Laguna Beach Wednesday.
Shue clocked a 1:53.54 in the event, breaking the old mark of
1:53.89.
CdM won nine of 11 events.
Kim McKay won both the 100 backstroke (1:04.28) and the 100
butterfly (1:02.30) and swam a leg on both the winning 200 medley and
200 free relay teams.
Jordan Anae in the 200 individual medley (2:24.02), Lauren McAdams
in the 50 free (27.97), Britney Wigley in the 500 free (5:47.82) and
Juliane Piggott in the 100 breaststroke (1:22) also won individual
events for CdM.

Eagle girls unbeaten
* SWIMMING: Estancia High’s girls swim maintained its unbeaten
season with a 116-54 Golden West League victory over host Saddleback
Wednesday.
Courtney Hess and Marina “Coco” Abdul set personal records in the
200-yard freestyle (2:18.83) and 100 butterfly (1:14.22),
respectively, for Estancia (7-0, 3-0 in league).
Estancia’s boys swim team claimed nine of 11 events, but still
fell to Saddleback, 86-82, Wednesday.
Paul Collier, Sean Goodman and Chad Kunert each claimed two
events, but the Eagles didn’t place anyone in the top three in the 50
freestyle.
Anthony Hermann tallied a personal best in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.96) after trailing through 75 yards.
Estancia fell to 5-2, 2-1 in league.

Sage Hill sweeps
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce tallied a
season-high 30 kills and the Sage Hill School boys volleyball team
remained undefeated with a 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 nonleague victory over
visiting San Marino Wednesday.
Setter Jake Lazare amassed 42 assists while Alex Greer had five
blocks for Sage Hill (6-0).
Sage Coach Merja Connolly-Freund said the match was won at the
net.
The Lightning host Whitney at 5 p.m. Friday in their first league
home match.
Sea Kings earn first W
* GOLF: Zach Rabinovich shot a 1-under-par 35 and the visiting
Corona del Mar High boys golf team tallied its first victory of the
season with a 190-224 Pacific Coast League triumph over Laguna Beach
at the Aliso Viejo Golf Club’s Valley course.
Jamie Bloom shot 37 while Ben Tilsen (38), Rob Ury (40) and Eric
Miller (40) led the Sea Kings (1-8, 1-1 in league). Laguna Beach fell
to 0-2 in league.
Mesa comes alive
* SOFTBALL: Costa Mesa High’s softball team scored 12 runs -- all
with two outs -- in the bottom of the fourth inning and defeated
Saddleback, 13-1, to begin Golden West League play Wednesday.
Freshman Danielle Morton began a string of five straight hits to
jump start the Mesa rally. Kelly Topps went 2 for 3 while Uyen Mai
went 2 for 4 with a triple for Mesa (5-4). Jane-E Yamamoto also
doubled for the Mustangs.
Jackie Butler struck out seven with no walks in five innings to
notch her fifth victory this season.
The Mustangs host Ocean View in a key league game at 3 p.m.
Friday.

Wolverines bite Sailors
* BASEBALL: Andrew Ross’ RBI double broke a 1-1 tie and the host
Aliso Niguel High baseball team went on to a 4-1 Sea View League
victory over Newport Harbor Wednesday. The Wolverines (2-0 in league)
scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the tie.
Greg Miner brought in Bobby Ward, pinch-running for Jeff Sanchez,
on a fielder’s choice in the fourth for the Sailors (4-4, 0-2).
Karo Makserjian doubled off the left-field fence in the top of the
seventh, but a Newport runner was thrown out at the plate for the
second out.
Patrick Keehan struck out two in five innings for Newport, which
hosts Irvine at 3 p.m. Friday in a league game.

Vanguard breaks out
* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team scored six runs
in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 14-5 Golden State
Athletic Conference upset victory over fifth-ranked Point Loma
Nazarene Wednesday.
The Lions (8-19, 2-10 in the GSAC) chased Point Loma starter Joe
Stangl after just five batters in the first. Scott Martin then
greeted reliever Chris Empiro with a single to score two runs and the
rout was on.
Martin tallied two hits while Nikolaus Crouch slammed a two-run
home run in the fourth inning for Vanguard, which had 10 hits, with
all but one starter reaching base safely. Crouch and Travis
Westerfield each tallied three RBIs.
Point Loma, ranked No. 5 in the NAIA, fell to 25-5, 9-2 in the
GSAC.
Jason Searle struck out four and walked four in 7 1/3 innings to
get his first win this season.

Coast drops three
* GOLF: The host Orange Coast College’s men’s golf team had its
worst showing of the season according to Coach Barry Wallace and
dropped three matches to Irvine Valley, Palomar and Cuyamaca in
Orange Empire Conference play at the Santa Ana Country Club
Wednesday.
The Pirates (8-7, 7-6 in the OEC) shot 418, the worst of any of
the four schools, while Cuyamaca carded a 382 to take top honors.
Josh Dean led OCC with an 81 followed by Shaun Vickers and Peter
Baker, who each shot 82. Jason Cassidy fired an 84 while Joo Namkoong
carded an 89.
Gauchos shut out Bucs
* SOFTBALL: The Orange Coast College softball team managed five
hits, but no runs as it dropped an Orange Empire Conference game to
host Saddleback, 3-0, Wednesday.
Yvonne Diaz took the loss for the Pirates (9-19, 1-9) while the
Gauchos improved to 13-9, 5-4.

* GOLF: Rhett Palmer and Chris Willard each shot 38, but the
visiting Newport Harbor High boys golf team lost to Dana Hills,
193-205, in a nonleague match Wednesday at the par-36 El Niguel
Country Club.
Brandon Sowers (42), Michael Benvenuti (43) and Davis Pemstein
(44) also scored for Newport (4-4). Andy Kim earned medalist honors
with a 37 for Dana Hills (5-6).
