Sandpiper clinches share of league title

Sandpiper secured a share of the Tuesday League championship in city

of Laguna Beach Community Services Dept. Summer 16 Slow Pitch

Softball leagues play by defeating second-place Used Cars, 11-5, at

Riddle Field.

The victory gave Sandpiper a three-game lead over Used Cars and

Team Viagra, which now share second-place, with three regular season

games remaining on the schedule.

Sandpiper got the victory the hard way.

Used Cars bolted out to a 3-1 lead through three innings on the

strength of home runs by Pat Toohey and Mike MacKenzie.

But in the top of the fourth inning, Sandpiper’s Chris Howell

blasted a grand slam and Art Johnson brought in another run on a

sacrifice fly in a momentum-turning inning.

Howell added two singles to his grand slam to lead the Sandpiper

offense and Mickey Allen and Jeff Hemighaus each singled three times.

Toohey and MacKenzie added solo home runs in the bottom of the

fifth inning to cut Used Cars deficit to 7-5, but Sandpiper pushed

across four more runs in the top of the six.

The key hit in the inning was Johnson’s three-run double.

In other Tuesday League games:

Team Viagra 11, Ganahl Lumber 5

Team Viagra nabbed its fourth win in its last five outings to move

into a second-place tie with Used Cars.

Dave Brobeck led the Team Viagra charge with a home run, double

and pair of singles.

Adding to the Team Viagra offense was Nate Pivaroff with a double

and two singles and home runs by Cam Hamil, Keith Mulvaney and Gary

Greene.

Ganahl Lumber managed just three singles in the game.

Good, Bad and Ugly 5, Forty Majority 2

Despite getting just six hits, Good, Band and Ugly was able to

turn back Forty Majority.

Fred Mastin homered and Greg Daw doubled.

Mark Linton singled twice for Forty Majority.

In Wednesday League action:

Mesa Verde Partners 17, Courtesy Auto Body 1

With the win, Mesa Verde Partners picked up a half-game on idle

Arborists to take sole possession of first-place in the league

standings.

Mesa Verde Partners bats were red-hot with seven home runs, with

Jeff Pick and Nate Pivaroff each hitting two.

Danny Lane, Steve McKinlay and David Sommerville each hit one

homer.

Mesa Verde Partners racked up 19 hits, overall.

Nick Pivaroff had a first inning home run and single to account

for both Courtesy Auto Body hits.

Sports World 5, Island Shade 0

Lance Stewart hurled a three-hitter and allowed just one

extra-base hit in recording the shutout.

Matt Kulpia topped Sports Worlds’ offense with a first inning solo

home run and two singles.

Andy Bunn’s double in the fifth inning highlighted Island Shade’s

offense.

In Thursday League action:

Rotary 7, Chico’s Bail Bonds 6

Rotary’s upset win allowed idle Team Hobie to move into a

first-place tie with previously unbeaten Chico’s Bail Bonds.

Rotary lead-off batter Jonathan Todd went three for three with a

solo homer and two singles while Bob Sweet, Steve Sweet and David

Zogg each hit a home run and combined for five RBIs.

Chico’s Bail Bonds got two home runs and a single from Mike

McKenzie, a home run and double from David Sommerville and a home run

from Josh Stock.

Compound Fractures 5, C-Dawgs 2

Compound Fractures made it two straight wins despite being outhit

by the C-Dawgs, 7-6.

Eric John hit a two-run double and Brandy Faber had an RBI single

for Compound Fractures.

The C-Dawgs had a pair of three for three hitters as Frank Ranieri

homered and hit two singles and Randy Kerr singled three times.

South Laguna Hamstrings 12, Arbitech 1

Mike Wallace whacked a pair of homers as the Hamstrings routed

Arbitech.

Alex Carter smashed a three-run home run and also singled and

Andrew Marriner hit a three-run homer for the winners.

Noel Harris and Rob Malone combined to five-hit Arbitech, which

had four singles and got a home run from Tony Fusati.
