Eclectic consignment

A new consignment shop with European and artistic inspiration is bringing a quirky sense of décor to Laguna Beach at affordable costs.

Established by business partners J. Steven Ayres and Bridgette Shaw, the Laguna Beach General Store offers an array of styles, including one-of-a-kind pieces, rare designer items and original artwork and jewelry.

“Our goal is to be a different kind of consignment store that carries affordable high design,” Shaw said. “ Striving to uncover the usual, we have produced an edited collection of modern, tropical, French, antique, primitive, villa chic and Hollywood glamour décor.”

From a 1930s Italian deco armoire to an Eero Saarinen tulip table to a refurbished hot-pink patent-leather wing chair accessorized by zebra-print pillows, the store carries an eclectic assortment of dressers, sofas, chairs, lamps and chandeliers, cabinets and more.

“The possibilities are endless to make your own style statement, have fun, break the rules and make your house your own,” Shaw said.

Among the selection of vintage prints, paintings, raku, mosaics and jewelry is work by local artists Maria O’Malley, Kimberly Merrill, Marcia Weatherholt-Bernhardt and Christine Kunkel.

These artists will be featured at the store’s “Treasure” Trunk Show on Dec. 12, along with handmade leather bags, jewelry and gift items.

With different backgrounds but a love for travel in common, Ayres and Shaw draw inspiration from their U.S. and European travels.

Ayres, a Chicago native and 15-year resident of Laguna Beach who calls himself a “treasure junk man,” has also lived in New England, Hawaii and Nashville, where he owned and ran a similar store.

“I find inspiration everywhere, from L.A. to Paris,” he said.

Shaw, a professed “closet artist” from Laguna who likes to explore Batik, mosaic and painting, lived in France. She has been a gallery director and represented painters and sculptors.

“Together, with our wide-ranging experiences with travel and art, we create a unique offering at our store,” she said.
