Foot patrol officers back in downtown

Foot patrol officers can now be seen in downtown Laguna Beach, just a couple of weeks after City Council candidates discussed the possibility of reinstating them at a forum.

Reserve Officer Harold Griswold was the last foot patrol officer and retired about 10 years ago, Sgt. Louise Callus said in an email.

Two civilian enforcement officers have been assigned to the downtown areas after businesses voiced concerns about homelessness, panhandling and skateboarding.

Officers Randy King and Fred Casas are retired law enforcement officers who previously worked outside Laguna Beach. They’ll be working 20 hours a week on this “special project,” Callus said.

Although a foot patrol officer hasn’t been around for a decade, Callus said bike units patrol during the summer months in downtown and Heisler Park.
