Newport Beach police officers served the community and hungry customers at their annual Tip-A-Cop event Wednesday evening to raise money for the Special Olympics in Orange County.

This year’s event raised about $8,700, while last year’s event raised $6,000.

Twenty-five officers served food at the Yard House in Fashion Island for the event. One of the K-9 officers, Jardo, joined the festivities dressed as a hot dog and accepted donations placed in his collar, said Kathy Lowe, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department.

The money was donated to the Special Olympics Southern California – Orange County Region. Also, as host of the event, the Yard House provided a $25 gift card for each donation of $25 or more.

“We are incredibly grateful for the community’s support and proud to be able to help support the dedicated Special Olympic athletes,” Lowe said.
