Herman I. Kimmel
Herman I. Kimmel passed away on April 5, 2013. He was born in 1923 and attended local schools in Eagle Rock and Pasadena. He leaves a wife of 34 years, Sharon Baker Kimmel, formerly of Choteau, Montana, and a nephew, David Kimmel of Pasadena. Following service with the U.S. Navy he attended UCLA and majored in Business Administration. Herman was a Registered Traffic Engineer in the state of California where he actively engaged in traffic engineering for more than 40 years. He was employed by the California Division of Highways (now Caltrans) for four years as a design engineer, specializing in freeway and major highway design and development.
The lure of Orange County’s clean air and beaches enticed Mr. Kimmel to the Orange County Road Department where he served as Traffic Engineer. Following 11 years with Orange County he founded Herman Kimmel and Associates, where for 20 years he provided consulting services to countless developers and public agencies in Southern California. As President of Herman Kimmel and Associates (HKA) Mr. Kimmel provided technical direction in the preparation of plans for Traffic Signal Design and Systems, Street Lighting, Construction Traffic Control and Traffic and Transportation Engineering Studies.
Beginning in 1969 he was an active member of the Los Pescadores Fishing Club and served as president in 1978. HKA merged with Robert Bein, William Frost and Associates (RBF) in 1988 where Mr. Kimmel served as Vice President until 1992. His professional affiliations include the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Fellow Life, Orange County Traffic Engineering Council (Chairman 1966-67) and Consulting Engineers Association of California. His awards include Outstanding Engineer Merit Award, 1992 from the Institute of Transportation Engineers, District 6.
Following his retirement from RBF, Herman and a few of his fishing friends took his Tollycraft sportfishing boat, the Libre, to Cabo San Lucas where he ran deep sea charters for nearly 5 years. He and his wife purchased a condo at Marina Sol in Cabo and they spent time there and at their home in Newport Beach.
Any memorials in honor of Herman Kimmel should be made to your favorite charity.
