Devotees of the Virgin of Guadalupe fill the streets of H.B.’s Oak View neighborhood for saint’s feast day

Huntington Beach residents gathered in the Oak View neighborhood Thursday for the second of a two-night celebration of the Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a popular Catholic feast day honoring the patron saint of Mexico.

Residents erect altars throughout the neighborhood and devotees pray to Mary, known as the Virgin of Guadalupe, giving thanks and asking for continued blessing and protection in the coming year.

Dec. 12 is the day that Catholics, usually of Mexican descent, mark the legend of the Virgin Mary’s appearance to Juan Diego in Mexico in December 1531.
